The husband is a native of Genoa, Italy, and the wife had come to share his love of that historic city. This led the clients to request a classical street façade inspired by the architecture of Genoese palazzi.

SGW sought out antique books detailing the stone ornamentation of Genoese buildings of the 15th to 18th centuries, and in particular the Palazzo Giorgio d'Oria, the Palazzo Cambasio, the Villa Paradiso, and the Palazzo Reale were carefully studied.
